Fly Fishing Instruction and Guide Service
Hello folks,
I am a professional fly fishing instructor and guide with 25 years of experience on our local mountain streams. Since teaching others about the art of fly fishing is one of my greatest pleasures in life, anglers of all experience levels are welcome and I am certain that I can provide you with both knowledge and skills that will not only improve your understanding of the sport but will also increase your enjoyment of the time that you spend on the water. For more information, please visit my web site located at -flyfishing.com.
For those of you with a bit of experience, I offer guided, backcountry, walk & wade trips on local mountain streams such as Buffalo Creek and Rockhouse Creek as well as guided kayak fly fishing trips on Julian Price Lake. For those of you interested in learning the age old art of fly fishing for stream born trout, I offer an extensive lesson progression for the novice angler. My novice lessons include the use of an Orvis rod and reel outfit as well as all necessary terminal tackle along with a basic casting lesson and professional streamside instruction. On the other hand, my guided trips are designed specifically for the experienced angler who posses their own gear and a strong sense of adventure. Thus, these trips are perfect for those of you who are looking for an intimate wilderness experience or a relaxed day o on the lake.
For those of you who are just now entering the sport of fly fishing or would like to learn more about the basics of fly casting, equipment selection, fly selection, how to read a trout stream, and how to present the fly to the fish, I have developed a series of three novice lessons that have received considerable acclaim from my students. In order to be successful at any type of fishing, an angler must first have a basic understanding of how the fish perceives its world. Thus, my first novice lesson starts with a series of short lectures designed to teach the angler about the trout?s environment and progresses into a two-part casting lesson that begins with a yard-casting session and finishes with an on-water casting session specifically designed to provide a significant improvement in an angler?s casting efficiency and accuracy. Next, I teach basic streamside skills such as how to read the water and how to recognize and identify aquatic insects, as well as an explanation of the different categories of flies and how to fish with them coupled with actual practice in the tactics necessary to locate and catch fish. Also, I reinforce each lesson with visual aids, demonstrations, and lecture along with on-water practice in order to make it easier for my students to retain the knowledge that I impart.
Last, it may interest you to note that my rates are $100 less than the local Orvis shop charges for the same type of trip. Plus, I will be happy to answer any questions you may have concerning equipment selection and to provide you with suggestions on fly patterns. So, if you are interested in booking a trip, then please contact me via e-mail to see when I am available.
Guided Walk/Wade Trips for Wild Mountain Trout-
In my opinion, small, mountain streams and ultra-wary native trout present the fly fisherman with the ultimate challenge to their tactical and casting skills. Thus, I guide all of my "Wild Water" trips on local, mountain trout streams designated as Wild Mountain Trout Waters. There, anglers will be presented with the opportunity to ?hunt? native Brown, Rainbow, Brook and Speckled trout in some of the most pristine waters the Southeast has to offer. However, please note that fishing these streams requires good tactical and casting skills as well as a short hike on well-maintained trails to reach the prime areas. Last, each angler will need their own gear and either a Comprehensive Inland Fishing or Sportsman license available online from the N.C Wildlife Resource Commission or in person from one their agents.

Guided New River Float Trips for Smallmouth Bass-
For those of you who have never caught a streamborn Smallmouth Bass on a fly rod, you are definitely missing out on one the best experiences that freshwater fly fishing has to offer! In fact, Smallmouth Bass living in streams are incredibly strong fish and thus, fighting an average sized streamborn Smallmouth is like fighting a very large Trout. In addition, Smallmouth Bass are neither as wary nor as picky about what they eat as Trout are and thus, they make an excellent introduction to fly fishing for novices. Consequently, a canoe or kayak is the perfect vehicle for Smallmouth Bass fishing because they provide the angler with both stealth and maneuverability without the noise and hassle of a motor boat. Plus, our guide carries a digital camera and will be photographing your trip throughout the day and we will gladly mail you a CD containing all of your pictures so that you can share your experience with your friends. In addition, we work with New River Outfitters which is located on the bank of the New River near the town of West Jefferson to provide canoe or kayak rental service as well as shuttle service upstream from the outfitter's store.
About the New River:
The New River is the oldest river in the U.S. and is the second oldest river in the world and in 1988, it was designated as one of only fourteen American Heritage Rivers. In addition, it's origin is located near the village of Blowing Rock, N.C. and flows through parts of North Carolina, West Virginia, and Virginia before merging with the Gauley River near Charleston. While some people find it strange that the oldest river in the U.S. is called "New", its original name was the Woods River (named after Colonel Abram Woods; a noted European explorer). Thus, the prevailing theory about how the river acquired its present name is that in the late 1700's or early 1800's surveyors who were working their way across the country came upon the New River and when they noticed that it wasn't on any of their maps, they labeled it "New". However, regardless of the origin of its name, the New River is one of the best Smallmouth Bass fisheries in North Carolina. In addition, it is easy to navigate and is relatively free of rapids and those that do exist are minor and easily negotiated in either a kayak for a canoe. Thus, the New River presents the perfect environment for the paddling angler to pursue streamborn Smallmouth Bass with a fly rod.

Guided Fly Fishing Lessons-
As I mentioned previously, teaching others about the sport of fly fishing is one of my greatest passions in life and thus I have been doing so for about fifteen years now. Therefore, I understand exactly what novices need to learn in order to become successful anglers and how to teach them. Thus, I have chosen to present my first novice lesson on Joe's Creek which is stocked regularly through the summer months by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission so that anglers will have the opportunity to catch stocked Brown and Rainbow trout as well as native Smallmouth Bass. In addition, this stream is easily accessed from the road and is fairly wide so casting is relatively easy for novices. Thus, this stream is perfect for my first lesson which focuses on short-range casting skills and proper dry fly presentation and nymph fishing technique. Then, after completing the first lesson, anglers may choose to return for either or both of my next two lessons; one of which refines the skills learned in my first lesson by fishing on the much smaller Delayed Harvest section of Wilson Creek and the other of which focuses on long-range casting skills and hunting large fish with streamers.
